A Three-Hour Seminar in Recognition of National Nutrition Month

8:00 pm – “Mechanism or Action of Recent Pharmaceutical Interventions to Possibly Complement Nutritional Interventions for Weight Management”

Descriptive Summary:

This presentation will focus on how GLP-1 receptor agonists, which were initially designed to treat type 2 diabetes, can mitigate metabolic syndrome and help with weight management. The mechanism of action of GLP-1 agonists and their role in obesity prevention, along with recommendations for multi-component treatments, including diet and exercise, will be discussed. Concerns over gastrointestinal side effects and other issues, such as cost, will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify mechanism of action of GLP-1 receptor agonists, specifically semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), in weight management;
  2. Address challenges and safety concerns associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists; and
  3. Discuss multi-component treatment strategies for obesity management with diet and lifestyle as the cornerstone of pharmaceutical interventions such as GLP-1 receptor agonists.

This course is approved by the Commission for Dietetic Registration (CDR) for three (3) continuing education units.

Other Healthcare Professionals:

All other healthcare professionals will receive a general certificate of attendance. Please check with your accreditation board with respect to receiving credit for this program.

Eligibility for 1199SEIU Members

Training and Employment Fund Members

Members must have been a part-time or full-time employee for at least one year, work at least three-fifths of a regular workweek, and work for an employer who contributes to the 1199SEIU Training and Upgrading Fund or the 1199SEIU Greater New York Education Fund.

City of New York Education, Child and Eldercare Fund Members

Pharmacists, Dietitians, Clinical Laboratory Practitioners and LPNs must have worked with NYC Health + Hospitals or a mayoral agency for at least one year.
