The transmission dynamics of the virus and some of the factors that contribute to super-spreader events will be discussed. The illness severity spectrum (i.e., that some people have completely asymptomatic infection, while others develop critical illness) and the factors leading to this will also be examined.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Review the basics of SARS-CoV-2 virology and origins;
- Review the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2;
- Review the illness spectrum and pathophysiology of severe COVID-19; and

Presenter:
Raymonde E. Jean, MD, FCCP, FAASM
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will provide an overview of physiological changes in lung structure and functions associated with COVID-19 pneumonia. Severe COVID-19 infection is defined by cellular patterns of epithelial, microvascular and fibrotic injury, with cellular injury patterns manifesting clinically through hyperinflammation and fibrotic lung disease. Acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Review the physiologic and histopathologic changes in the lungs associated with COVID-19 pneumonia;
- Discuss the severity and manifestation of COVID-19 pneumonia; and

The evidence for the treatment of lung diseases associated with post COVID-19 infection will be discussed, with a focus on interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary fibrosis. Additionally, therapies that may offer benefit to patients with persistent pulmonary symptoms post-COVD-19 will be explored.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Discuss medications used for supportive therapy in patients with persistent pulmonary symptoms post COVID-19;

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand the impact of Covid-19 and inactivity on cardiopulmonary physiology and functional status in the post-Covid-19 patient;
- Understand the most commonly seen systemic involvement and associated symptoms in the post-Covid-19 patient;
- Identify the factors involved in risk stratification in the post-Covid-19 patient to ensure patient safety prior to beginning a rehabilitation program; and
