Dear Members,For millions of people in the United States, uncertainty about healthcare access has been
extremely worrisome, which can be harmful to both physical and mental health. As an 1199SEIU member, you have the security of knowing that your health coverage is protected. In addition, your Benefit Fund continually explores ways to provide you with programs and benefits that help you get—and stay—healthy.
In this issue of For Your Benefit, we include information about a new benefit for you—a diabetes peer-mentoring program that has proven successful in a pilot program for our Home Care members. Diabetes affects a growing number of our members, and we are confronting it head-on. In our program, we pair members who have diabetes and are having a hard time controlling their condition with fellow members who have successfully managed their diabetes, and have been trained to help others improve their health and avoid complications. We will also soon be visiting 1199SEIU worksites to offer health education sessions, overseen by our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Van H. Dunn. The first session will be a presentation on preventing diabetes and hypertension, so keep an eye out for more details.
We know that staying healthy can be a challenge, and that is why we share stories of fellow members who have taken advantage of their benefits to improve their health and well-being. In this issue, you will read about Althea Elliott, a Registered Nurse at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, who used her health benefits to get her family the care they need; her training benefits to earn an advanced degree; and our 1199SEIU Citizenship Program to become a U.S. citizen.
We want to help you protect your financial health as well, so we remind you of all the ways you can get information about—and even apply for—your pension benefit. We include information on requesting an online pension estimate and accessing pension counseling from our Outreach Coordinators at all of our satellite offices.
For those of you who have children, we include information on upcoming parenting seminars, as well as details on how to register for 2018 child-care benefits. We also encourage you to check out some of the online opportunities to enhance and upgrade your job skills and education through our Training and Employment Funds.
We hope you enjoy this issue of For Your Benefit. If you have any questions about your benefits, please call our Member Services Department at (646) 473-9200, and a representative will be happy to help you.
