Dear Members,When former President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act in 2010, we at the Benefit Funds celebrated the passage of the bill, which for the first time—while not as comprehensive as 1199SEIU benefits—gave millions of people in the U.S. access to an essential package of health benefits, without regard to age, gender or pre-existing conditions. Now—with millions at risk of losing those benefits—the value of the healthcare coverage the 1199SEIU Benefit Funds provide has never been clearer.
In this issue, you will read about a fellow member who took advantage of her benefits to make healthy changes in her life. Regina Hooks, a Financial Advocate in the Patient Access Department at Catskill Regional Medical Center, struggled with weight loss and Type 2 diabetes for years, before working with her primary care doctor and a dietitian—covered by the Fund—to lose more than 60 pounds and get her condition under control. Regina is just one example of what is possible with the resources available to you, including comprehensive health benefits, worksite wellness initiatives, health fairs, discounted health club memberships and more.
Unfortunately, living with chronic conditions is something many of our members know all too well; so in this issue, we give you the facts about Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. For those of you who are at risk, have been identified as pre-diabetic, have diabetes or would like to learn more about what you can do to prevent it, we invite you to join us at our “Diabetes Prevention and Management” workshop on July 22.
Beyond health benefits, we support you in other areas of your life, so in this issue, we detail programs and workshops that can help you buy your first home; keep the home you own; understand, establish or repair your credit; and make well-informed financial decisions. And, you will find updates on opportunities available to you through your training and child-care benefits.
We hope you enjoy this issue of For Your Benefit. If you have any questions about your benefits, please call our Member Services Department at (646) 473-9200, and a representative will be happy to help you.
