Summer is here, with warmer weather and longer days, making it a great time to give your fitness routine a boost if you are already committed to one or to get moving if you have been putting it off. In this edition of For Your Benefit, we have included a story about how to break out of a “fitness rut” if you find that you get stuck every now and then and need to renew your enthusiasm.
In this issue, you can read about how one of your fellow members, Adrienne Channer, a Unit Manager at Silvercrest Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, has lost more than 80 pounds and continues to eat right and exercise, with the hope that her healthier lifestyle will eventually eliminate the need for any medication to treat her Type 2 diabetes. Adrienne has already overcome some major hurdles in dealing with other health issues and says she could not have done it without the support of her Benefit Fund’s wellness programs and her comprehensive health coverage.
Speaking of Type 2 diabetes, this edition of For Your Benefit offers tips for managing the condition or, better yet, preventing it altogether. You will find a reminder about our upcoming “Diabetes Prevention and Management” workshop, where a registered dietitian from our Wellness and Member Assistance Program will explain how to eat healthy, our fitness instructor will lead an all-ages Pilates class and our social workers will discuss strategies for reducing stress while still juggling a busy schedule.
Your Benefit Fund is here to help you get the most effective treatment for any health issue, including cancer—which, while frightening, is no longer a terminal diagnosis. With early intervention and the right approach, many people can be cured or go into remission. That is why we are excited to share with you news about a new partnership in cancer care that encourages a more holistic and patient-centered approach to healthcare delivery.
And of course, we received some great feedback about devoting a special section to what has become a rare and valuable benefit—your defined benefit pension plan. Very few workers today receive a defined benefit pension, which is guaranteed for life and means you will know exactly what to expect every month. The articles in this section should help remind you not only of the value of your benefit package, but also to kick-start your planning process, whether you are months, years or even decades away from retiring.
Finally, included, too, are the recurring sections that update you on what is going on in your Training and Employment Funds and Child Care Funds. As always, we hope you enjoy this issue of For Your Benefit. And remember, if you have any questions about your benefits, please call our Member Services Department at (646) 473-9200, and a representative will be happy to help you.
