Reminder: NBF Helps Eligible Members Claim the Earned Income Tax Credit

As this year's tax-filing deadline nears, 1199SEIU members still have time to take advantage of the National Benefit Fund's (NBF) Tax Preparation Assistance Program and receive help filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For the past 10 years, the NBF and its partners at New York City's EITC Coalition --- led by the city's Department of Consumer Affairs, Office of Financial Empowerment --- and the Food Bank For New York City, have assisted thousands of members in accessing free tax preparation services and getting the most out of their tax refund. The 2015 program began in January at locations in all five boroughs of New York City as well as on Long Island, and in Westchester County and New Jersey. Many locations offer weekday, evening and weekend hours as well as walk-in service right up to the April 15 deadline. For more information, please visit www.1199SEIUFunds.org.

RNLMI and LMP Facilitate Updates to 11 New York City Hospitals' Staffing Guidelines

In September, the 1199SEIU/League Registered Nurse Labor Management Initiative (RNLMI) and the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds' Labor Management Project (LMP) began working with 11 New York City hospitals representing 1199SEIU RNs to update staffing guidelines. RNLMI and LMP staff also provided the hospitals with training in Interest-Based Problem Solving techniques and helped review team-building models for their potential to promote understanding of objectives and improve patient-centered care.

In December and January, committees from six of the hospitals --- Montefiore Medical Center (Wakefield Campus); Mount Sinai Beth Israel (Petrie Campus); Mount Sinai Beth Israel Brooklyn; Mount Sinai Queens, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and New York Community Hospital --- submitted their recommendations to improve patient care and quality of work life, including commitments to decreasing overtime usage, hiring more support staff, decreasing unscheduled absences, reducing patients' length of stay and adjusting staff schedules to increase patient satisfaction. The five remaining hospitals are working toward their final recommendations. All guidelines will be reviewed for approval by Union and management leadership.

The initiative comes out of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) reached in July 2014 between 1199SEIU and the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes of New York. Specifically, the CBA's Memorandum of Agreement outlines labor and management's shared commitment to update staffing guidelines in order to keep pace with advances in clinical technology, pharmacology and electronic medical records. The guidelines were last reviewed in 1999. For more information, please visit www.1199SEIUFunds.org.

1199SEIU Future of America Learning Center Celebrates Its 18th Annual Science Fair

On Saturday, March 14, the 1199SEIU Future of America Learning Center (FALC) celebrated its 18th Annual Science Fair, with students showcasing their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) projects to family, friends and guests.

Visitors were invited to explore eight classrooms, each featuring a different hands-on STEAM learning experience. In the "Healthy Habits" room, the preschool 2 class demonstrated for guests the importance of brushing teeth, washing hands and exercising to maintain a healthy body. Children and parents made healthy smoothies and explored the process of tooth decay by dipping eggshell "teeth" into soda, water and milk. In the universal pre-kindergarten (UPK) 1 class exhibit, "Systems of the Body," guests observed the workings of the digestive system, with the help of a paper towel roll "esophagus."

Visitors also toured other UPK and preschool classrooms, as well the toddler classroom, which highlighted such topics as "Sense of Touch through STEAM," "Exploring the World through Color" and "The Water Cycle." Through each exhibit, guests experienced firsthand how FALC students explore, observe, ask questions and integrate their learning into their everyday lives.
