National Benefit Fund Launches Annual Flu Shot Campaign
The National Benefit Fund (NBF) has launched its annual Protecting Our Health campaign, urging members to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza. For years, the NBF has helped educate 1199SEIU members on the importance of getting a flu shot to protect themselves, their families and their patients or residents from the virus, and to help maintain a healthy workforce. This year's initiative includes distributing flyers at institutions, to remind members to get vaccinated at their worksites or doctors' offices; posting information on the Benefit and Pension Funds' website, Facebook page and in the Fall issue of the Fund's member magazine, For Your Benefit; and issuing a voiceblast telephone message later this month.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone get a flu shot, particularly anyone who is at high risk for complications from the flu, including healthcare workers, pregnant women and anyone with a chronic medical condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.

New Care Management Training Program Set to Begin this Month
The 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds, in partnership with Alfred University, have developed the first Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Care Management in New York State. Designed to respond directly to the needs of the New York State healthcare industry and ongoing reforms to the healthcare delivery system, the program will provide knowledge and skills training required for the new healthcare job title of Care Manager, as established by the National Academy of Certified Care Managers. The weekend program will begin on October 29, 2016, and conclude on May 13, 2017, at the 1199SEIU Staten Island office. The program consists of 12 graduate credits, and the curriculum includes "Principles of Counseling," "Foundations of Mental Health Counseling," "Human Development" and "Healthcare Delivery Systems and Aging Adults." The certificate program's aim is to train current healthcare workers, specifically those who already have a bachelor's degree and are performing or will be performing care management tasks that include care coordination, patient assessment, patient care planning and implementation of integrated patient care management. Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program Serves More than 850 Children in 2016
In the summer of 2016, the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation's Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program sent more than 850 children of 1199SEIU members to 17 summer camps, according to the final tally completed in September. The children attended camps in six states, including Vermont, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Connecticut. Open to members' children ages 9 to 15, the program offers a chance to attend two- to four-week summer sleep-away camps with activities that include swimming, gymnastics, hiking and music. At many camps, participants can concentrate on specific interests such as computers, dance and athletic activities. Members have the option of selecting co-educational or single-sex camps, as well as camps that allow children to return home on weekends. This year, the Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program offerings included the award-winning French Woods Sports and Arts Center in upstate New York, which provides children with an opportunity to focus on sports, arts and technology.

The Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program helps children of eligible 1199SEIU members develop social skills and build self-confidence in safe and supportive environments. Camps are selected based in part on parent surveys and are accredited by the American Camp Association. As of October 7, 2016, members can submit a 2017 application for the Anne Shore Sleep-Away Camp Program online at www.1199SEIUFunds.org/AnneShoreProgram. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2017. For more information, please email AnneShoreCampProgram@1199Funds.org or call (212) 564-2220, extension 3460.
