National Benefit Fund Covers New At-Home Colorectal Cancer Screening Test
The National Benefit Fund (NBF) now covers a new, non-invasive at-home test for colorectal cancer, the Cologuard Collection Kit. While early detection is key to successfully treating the disease, 1199SEIU members' colonoscopy rates are lower than the national average. By covering the FDA-approved Cologuard --- an easy-to-use testing kit that requires no special preparation, dietary restrictions or medication changes --- the Benefit Fund aims to remove the barriers that may prevent members from being screened. (The test is not recommended for those at high risk for colon cancer or who have a family or personal history of colon cancer, polyps or inflammatory bowel disease.) The NBF informed its members of this option in the Winter edition of its member magazine, For Your Benefit, and will send a targeted mailing to those over age 50 who have not been screened for colon cancer. The Benefit Fund is also encouraging providers to prescribe the test for their eligible NBF patients who have delayed being screened. For more information on Cologuard, please visit www.CologuardTest.com.

Tax Preparation Assistance Program Helps Eligible Members File for the EITC
The 1199SEIU National Benefit Fund's (NBF) Tax Preparation Assistance Program has long helped NBF members file for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) by assisting them in accessing free tax preparation services. This year, the NBF is again partnering with the NYC Coalition to help members receive all the money to which they are entitled. The program offers locations in New York City, as well as Westchester County, Long Island and New Jersey. Through April 18, tax filing day, 1199SEIU workers can take advantage of weekday, evening and weekend hours and, in most cases, walk-in service. For more information, please visit our web site.

1199SEIU League Training and Upgrading
Fund Undertakes a Far-reaching
Strategic Plan
The 1199SEIU League Training and Upgrading Fund (TUF) has made significant progress in the development of its five-year strategic plan to respond to the emerging needs of the healthcare industry. As part of this effort, initiated at the 2016 Board of Trustees Annual Meeting, TUF conducted a comprehensive survey to gather information from League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes of New York (LVHH) employers about core issues such as healthcare industry trends; worker shortage areas; employee training and language skill needs; trends; and industry and state requirements that affect worker recruitment in part-time and full-time employment. LVHH institutions received the survey in November 2016, and TUF staff members have begun reviewing preliminary responses. The results of the survey will help TUF's Board of Trustees better allocate its resources to training and career efforts; apply for additional funding from New York City, New York State, the federal government, not-for-profit organizations and other sources; and work with the City University of New York (CUNY) system, other post-secondary institutions and outside vendors to develop educational and training programs that address industry needs. If you have not yet completed the survey, please access it by visiting www.surveymonkey.com/r/MJPRXQL. For more information, please contact Florence Wong, director of TUF, at (212) 494-0598 or Florence.Wong@1199Funds.org.
