Labor Management Project Reps Attend Kaiser Permanente's Delegate Conference
In late March, Union and management representatives from NYU Langone Medical Center and North Shore-LIJ's Forest Hills Hospital joined staff from the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds' Labor Management Project (LMP) --- and more than 600 frontline workers --- at Kaiser Permanente's 2015 Union Delegate Conference in Anaheim, California. Participants attended plenary sessions on the importance of healthcare workers in implementing industry changes and workshops on skills development, health and workplace safety, the future of healthcare employment and more. Speakers included Dave Regan, President of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West; Liz Shuler, Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO; and Veenu Aulakh, Executive Director of the Center for Care Innovations. The conference gave the New York delegation a chance to connect with collaborative partners and discuss shared challenges with peers. "The workshops helped me look at issues 'outside the box,'" said Susan Dennis, a Unit Clerk and Union Delegate from North Shore-LIJ Heath System. "I can bring what I learned to the hospital and use it to provide better care for my patients." For more information on labor-management partnership initiatives, please contact Clyde Riggins at

Children Make the Most of a Chance to Grow During Spring Break

School breaks during winter and spring can be a challenging time for parents as they try to ensure their children's vacation is safe, enjoyable and educational. In April, another group of 1199SEIU members' children --- teens and pre-teens --- spent their spring break taking part in the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Fund's Holiday Sleep-Away Program. The latest group of 8- to 17-year-olds joined thousands of others who have benefited from the five-day sleep-away camp experience, which coincides each year with New York City's public school break.

1199SEIU pre-teens and teens in the Holiday Sleep-Away Program spent five days camping at one of two locations. Children between the ages of 8 and 13 attended the Fresh Air Fund's Camp Mariah in Fishkill, New York, where they engaged in recreational and educational activities designed to help them develop increased confidence and self-esteem. Children between ages 14 and 17 attended Camp Vacamas in West Milford, New Jersey, where they enjoyed activities geared toward helping them develop leadership qualities, teamwork skills and self-reliance.

Both camps offered a host of activities such as music and art classes, indoor and outdoor sports, hiking and more. For more information about next year's Holiday Sleep-Away Program, or any of the programs offered by the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Fund, please visit our website at or call (212) 564-2220.
