Health Care Employees Pension Fund Celebrates 65th Anniversary

This year, the 1199SEIU Health Care Employees Pension Fund (HCEPF) celebrates its 65th anniversary. Since its inception in 1951, the Fund has grown from covering only a few hundred workers to supporting nearly 70,000 1199SEIU retirees. Each year, the number of retirees continues to grow by the thousands. Last year alone, 8,997 workers retired and began collecting their pensions, and over the past 10 years, the number of 1199SEIU retirees has doubled. As the number of retirees continues to grow, so do our efforts to support our members in planning for their retirement. The Fund recently launched a secure, online pension estimate feature in "My Account," members' secure, web-based record of all their Fund benefits. Members can now securely review their personal and work histories online and request a pension estimate online. To request an estimate, members can visit www.1199SEIUBenefits.org and click on "My Account" --- the straightforward process was spelled out in a recent postcard sent to members, available here.

National Benefit Fund's Chief Medical Officer Honored for Outstanding Leadership

Dr. Van Dunn, the 1199SEIU National Benefit Fund's (NBF's) Chief Medical Officer (CMO), was honored on April 29 at the Sixth Annual National Urban Health Conference in recognition of his outstanding leadership in the healthcare field. Dr. Dunn presented the keynote remarks at the event, which was hosted by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce's "Healthy Eating & Healthy Living" initiative. The group joined with MetroPlus Health Plan and New York State Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright in presenting Dr. Dunn with its 2016 Outstanding Service and Achievement Award. The NBF welcomed Dr. Dunn in March as its new CMO. Dr. Dunn oversees the Fund's Clinical Management and Analytics functions. He is responsible for health and wellness initiatives and the pursuit of value-based strategies on behalf of all the Funds' 400,000 members.

Partnership Initiative to Educate New
Mental Health Counselors

The 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds (TEF) have teamed up with Alfred University to offer a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling. The program, to be taught in New York City, is a response to the changing demands of the healthcare industry --- including new staffing models --- and to requests from Performing Provider Systems (PPSs) involved in the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) Program.

Alfred University will create specific cohorts for incumbent healthcare workers and, along with the Center for Integrated Teacher Education (CITE), has developed an instructional model specifically targeted to the needs of adult learners and full-time workers. The program consists of 60 graduate credits to be completed in 24 months, attending school on a part-time basis. Upon completion, participants will have earned a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling and the Certificate of Advanced Study in Mental Health Counseling --- meeting all the eligibility requirements for the Licensed Mental Health Counselor credential in New York State.

TEF is currently recruiting participants, so please share this opportunity with 1199SEIU employees at your institution. For more information, please contact Greta Lewis, Assistant Program Specialist in the Population Health Department at (212) 284-9251 or populationhealth@1199Funds.org. You can also visit Alfred University's website to view the program at www.alfred.edu/gradschool/downstate/casmhc/.

Child Care Fund's Pre-RN Program Guides 1199SEIU Students into Nursing Profession

On May 23, the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation will honor 13 new WorkForce 2000 Pre-RN graduates at the Eighth Annual Pre-RN Lab Coat Ceremony, which recognizes the achievements of members' children who are considering a career path in nursing. Through fieldwork that includes hands-on experience and academic classes offered in partnership with New York University, the Pre-RN track of the WorkForce 2000 Program offers 1199SEIU high school students valuable work experience and an opportunity to discover the field of nursing. The program partners with institutions like Montefiore Medical Center to provide young people with opportunities for career development and education at institutions throughout the city; for example, all participants are certified in CPR by the conclusion of their coursework. By exposing 1199SEIU members' children to a career in nursing early, the Pre-RN track aims to increase both the availability and diversity of the New York City nursing workforce. For more information about the Pre-RN track of WorkForce 2000 or any of the benefits offered by the Child Care Corporation or Child Care Funds, please visit www.1199SEIUFunds.org/ccf, or call (212) 564-2220.
