Telemedicine Benefit Utilization Report Shows Positive Results
In May, the 1199SEIU Greater New York Benefit Fund introduced a new medical benefit, Teladoc, giving members access to a doctor by phone or video when they are sick or in pain, and their own doctor isn't available. The benefit has yielded a year-to-date savings of $536,163 on medical claims, according to utilization data collected through August 31, 2017. Eligible members have used Teladoc 729 times, accessing care from their homes rather than traveling to more costly emergency rooms and urgent care centers. In fact, 45 percent of those who used Teladoc said they would have gone to an urgent care center had the benefit not been available, and 21 percent said they would have gone to an emergency room, even for an issue that was not an emergency. The most common diagnoses included acute upper respiratory infections, rashes and other nonspecific skin eruptions, low back pain and acute bronchitis. Most-frequent users of Teladoc include members age 31 to 45 (34 percent). For more information on Teladoc, visit www.1199SEIUFunds.org/teladoc.
