National Benefit Fund Initiatives Target
Type 2 Diabetes
With three out of 10 1199SEIU members suffering from diabetes or pre-diabetes---------well above the 14 percent national average---------the National Benefit Fund (NBF) has created an education campaign and expanded its peer mentoring program. Dr. Van H. Dunn, the Benefit Funds' Chief Medical Officer, focuses on diabetes in the latest installments of his Healthy Living Spotlight video series. In Know the Warning Signs of Diabetes, Dr. Dunn addresses the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, while in Diabetes: It's More Than Just a Touch of Sugar, he shares important information---------including NBF resources---------that can help members manage their condition. To view these and other videos in the series, visit www.1199SEIUFunds.org/dr-dunn/.

The NBF's Diabetes Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program, administered by InquisitHealth, connects members who are struggling to keep their Type 2 diabetes under control with those who are successfully managing their condition. Participants receive coaching from their mentors by phone, text message reminders and check-ins, as well as personalized information from a professional nutritionist. The 1199SEIU Citizenship Program Honors Its New U.S. Citizens
The 1199SEIU Citizenship Program will host its 17th Annual "Celebration of New Citizens" on Friday evening, February 1, at Fund Headquarters. This year's guest speaker is Lenni B, Benson, Professor of Law at the New York Law School and founder of the Safe Passage Project, which provides pro bono legal representation for unaccompanied immigrant children. Dr. Van H. Dunn, Chief Medical Officer of the 1199SEIU Benefit Funds, and Sandi Vito, Executive Director of the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds, will also welcome the new citizens.

The 1199SEIU Citizenship Program, which is jointly administered by the Benefit and Pension Funds and the Training and Employment Funds, helps members apply for U.S. citizenship by providing legal assistance and educational services to help applicants navigate the often-complex process to prepare for the citizenship test. Since its inception in 2001, the program has supported more than 12,000 1199SEIU members, their eligible dependents and non-members in becoming U.S. citizens.

Three 1199SEIU members---------Raymund Paolo Cordero, an Acute Hemodialysis Nurse at The Mount Sinai Hospital; Jean Pervil, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Workmen's Circle MultiCare Center; and Svetlana Arziyeva, a Home Health Aide at Home Care Services for Independent Living--------will speak at Friday's celebration. Representing the National Benefit Fund, the Greater New York Benefit Fund and the Home Care Benefit Fund, respectively, they will share their personal journeys in becoming U.S. citizens.

Training and Employment Funds to Offer Symposium on the Opioid Crisis
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. To help combat this public-health emergency, the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds will present a six-hour symposium, "The Opioid Crisis: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery" for healthcare practitioners across the care continuum on March 15. The symposium will give an overview and epidemiology of the opioid epidemic; discuss opioid addiction and co-occurring disorders; provide a pharmacological perspective on naloxone and other opioid antagonist drugs; and present the latest evidence-based best practices. Attendees will also learn about ways they can engage with patients, family members and the community to mobilize against opioid-use disorders.

The symposium will take place at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, 524 West 59th Street in Manhattan, on Friday, March 15, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. It will also be available as a live videocast at various 1199SEIU-partner and satellite locations, as well as a live webcast. Certain healthcare professionals will receive continuing education credits for taking part in the symposium. For more information on this symposium, please visit www.1199SEIUBenefits.org/event/the-opioid-crisis/.
