Funds Continue COVID-19 Vaccination Education Campaign
As the COVID-19 vaccines are now being more widely administered, the Funds, the Union and employers are continuing to educate your 1199SEIU employees and members on the vaccines' safety and efficacy, as well as on vaccination efforts. The Benefit Funds' Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Van H. Dunn, hosts frequent webinars to provide information and answer questions about the vaccines and distribution plans, and he participates regularly in Tele-Town Halls conducted by the Union and in a series of webinars hosted by the Training and Employment Funds. Members may also email questions to Dr. Dunn directly at [email protected]. In addition, the Funds are using social media channels Facebook and Instagram to educate and feature 1199SEIU members who have received their vaccines, including Dr. Dunn.
Benefit Funds Help Members Claim the Earned Income Tax Credit
The Benefit Funds have again partnered with the Food Bank For New York City and the nonprofit educational program Ariva to help your 1199SEIU employees and members claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. Those who are income-eligible may also qualify to receive free tax preparation services to ensure that their taxes are prepared accurately and that they receive the full refund to which they are entitled. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Benefit Funds' partners are offering online or drop-off tax preparation services only. For more information, your employees and members may visit the Benefit Funds' website or call Member Services at (646) 473-9200.
TEF Works to Improve Members' Digital Literacy, Access and Equity
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has underscored the importance of digital equity, the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds (TEF) established a Digital Equity Committee to better understand and support the digital equipment, literacy and access needs of your 1199SEIU employees and members. TEF's efforts to date include implementing a digital drop-in lab to give members hands-on assistance with their digital devices. While the program was conducted with social distancing and other safety precautions, TEF has been providing assistance remotely since the Funds' offices closed following the rise in COVID-19 cases. In addition, TEF is leveraging grant funds to establish a tablet loan program with 500 Google Chromebooks and provide tech support to members to help them with their educational programs. TEF is now conducting a survey of the digital access and literacy needs of members to provide them with appropriate support. For more information, please contact Eric Johnson at [email protected].
WorkForce 2000 Orientations for Next Program Have Begun
Orientation sessions for the Child Care Corporation's WorkForce 2000 Program, which is slated to run from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022, began in January and will continue through mid-February. All sessions are taking place remotely via Zoom as a result of COVID-19 safety restrictions. Approximately 220 to 280 children are expected to take part in the 2021-2022 program. Although the deadline to sign up for this program year has passed, your 1199SEIU employees and members have an additional opportunity to enroll their children during the registration add-drop transfer period, which ends on April 19.

WorkForce 2000 is a year-round academic program designed to help children in grades 8 through 11 succeed in high school, prepare for college and explore career interests. The program provides leadership and development opportunities, along with academic coursework assistance through a New York City college on select Saturdays throughout the year. For more information on WorkForce 2000 and other youth programs, visit the Child Care Funds' website.
