Program and Learning Objectives
6:00 pm – Participants Log in
6:05 pm – Welcome and Introductory Remarks
6:00 pm – “MRI Safety for Healthcare Professionals”
Presenter:
Frank Cairo, R.T. (R) (MR) (CT)
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on MRI safety as a critical component of patient care and the responsibility of technologists. Screening procedures to identify contraindications, such as implanted devices or metallic foreign bodies; the importance of controlled access zones; quench procedures; and communication with patients will be discussed. The importance of following strict safety measures to prevent injuries and accidents, including minimizing acoustic noise exposure, preventing burns from conductive loops and maintaining adherence to American College of Radiology (ACR) safety guidelines, will be addressed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Explain the principles of MRI safety and potential hazards associated with magnetic fields, gradient fields and radiofrequency energy;
- Identify and evaluate patient risk factors during MRI screening to prevent injury and ensure compliance with established safety protocols; and
- Apply best practices for technologist and patient safety, including emergency preparedness and safe zone management.
7:30 pm— “Radiation Protection and Safety for Patients and Providers”
Presenter:
Eric Lobel, R.T. (R) (MR) (CT)
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on why radiation protection is essential in diagnostic imaging to safeguard patients, healthcare workers and the public from unnecessary ionizing radiation exposure. The ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, time-distance-shielding strategies and regulatory dose limits set by organizations such as the NCRP and NRC will be discussed. Proper equipment use; protective apparel; dose monitoring; and patient-centered dose reduction techniques, including justification and optimization of imaging procedures, will be addressed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Describe the biological effects of ionizing radiation and the importance of minimizing exposure to patients and personnel;
- Demonstrate the application of ALARA principles and protective measures, including time, distance and shielding in clinical practice; and
- Interpret dose limits, monitoring requirements and regulatory standards to ensure compliance and maintain radiation safety.
9:00 pm — Participants submit online evaluations
