Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will move beyond an idea of pain simply as a direct indicator of injury, providing a more comprehensive, evidence-based view. Discussions about types of pain, the biology of pain and neuroplasticity, and using the holistic biopsychosocial model will provide physical therapists and rehabilitation professionals with a framework for assessing and treating clients experiencing pain.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify and understand types of pain commonly encountered in therapy settings;
- Discuss pain physiology and neuroplasticity; and
- Describe the biopsychosocial model of pain.
10:30 am — “Pain Assessment Tools”
Presenter:

Descriptive Summary:
Pain and functional assessment tools are useful in physical and occupational therapies, helping establish quantitative and qualitative baseline data to guide clinical decision-making and monitor progress. These tools can enhance communication with patients and empower them in setting goals for treatment outcomes. This presentation will focus on understanding and using pain assessment tools to guide treatment courses and to help with communicating with patients.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify and understand appropriate pain and functional assessment tools available in clinical practice;
- Use pain and functional assessment data to help guide courses of treatment; and
- Discuss how to incorporate pain and functional assessment data in communications with patients that can facilitate patient-centered care.

12:00 pm — “Pharmacologic Management of Pain in Therapy Settings”

Peter Lascarides, DO
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on medications that are used the most in rehab practice—such as opioids and non-opioids—including how they work and their side effects that could affect patient’s therapy sessions. Ways to integrate medication awareness into daily care and to work effectively with prescribers will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Review key drug classes used in pain management and their roles in rehab practice;
- Distinguish between non-opioid, opioid and adjuvant medications commonly encountered in therapy settings;
- Recognize drug side effects and interactions that may affect therapy sessions and patient safety; and
- Integrate medication considerations into treatment planning and communication with prescribers.
1:00 pm — “Setting Specific Considerations: Case Studies and Applications”
Presenter:

Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on the evaluation and treatment process, including the interview process, appropriate screening tools, differential diagnosis, objective measurements, principles of the biopsychosocial model, standards of practice and scope of practice. Personal tools and tactics for clinicians to use and to practice self-care will be discussed.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the principles of the biopsychosocial model;
- Understand the mind-body connection;
- Explain the differential diagnosis process;
- Describe scope of practice; and
- Provide case studies.
