Discover the building blocks to support a healthier you!

Discover the building blocks to support a healthier you!

Establishing a healthier lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built step by step, block by block. Taking the first steps can feel like the hardest part. By focusing on a few core building blocks, you can strengthen your foundation for long-term well-being and reduce your risk of illness.

    Healthy Eating

Food fuels your body and mind. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats gives you the nutrients you need to thrive. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks and excessive salt to protect your heart, weight and energy levels.

    Physical Activity

Movement is medicine. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week—whether it’s brisk walking, dancing, biking or anything you enjoy that makes your heart beat faster. Exercise helps manage weight, improves mood, lowers blood pressure and strengthens your muscles and bones.

    Sleep

Rest is not a luxury—it’s essential. Adults should strive for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep recharges your body, sharpens your mind and helps regulate hormones that affect hunger, stress and immunity.

    Emotional Fitness

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Practice stress management through deep breathing, mindfulness, journaling or connecting with loved ones. Don’t hesitate to seek support from a counselor or health professional if you’re struggling.

    Know Your Numbers

Awareness is essential. Keeping track of your health numbers helps you and your doctor catch and treat any concerns early.

    • BMI (Body Mass Index): Indicator of weight and body composition.
    • Blood pressure: High blood pressure can damage your heart and arteries.
    • Blood sugar: Helps identify risks for diabetes.
    • Cholesterol: High levels can raise the risk of heart disease.

Avoid Smoking, Vaping and Other Substances

Tobacco, vaping and recreational drugs can harm your lungs, heart and overall health. If you smoke or vape, talk to your doctor about tools and programs that can help you quit. Even small steps toward cutting down can make a big difference.

    Putting It All Together

Think of each of these building blocks as part of a structure. When you strengthen one area—like sleep or nutrition—you support the others. Over time, these healthy habits work together to build resilience, energy and a better quality of life.

Start small, be consistent and remember: Every positive choice you make builds a healthier you.

It’s time for your flu shot

As a healthcare worker, you’re at an increased risk of catching the flu—and spreading it to others. So, make sure to get vaccinated. If your employer offers the shot at your worksite, be proactive—get it as soon as possible. If not, remember that your Benefit Funds cover the vaccine—just make an appointment with your physician or visit a participating pharmacy. Fall is also a great time to find out if the latest COVID-19 vaccine is right for you, so speak with your doctor to find out which vaccines you are due for.

    Yolanda Acevedo

Constant Observer of Nurse Flow, Garnet Health

    WHY

Caring for her dad changed Yolanda Acevedo’s life, leading to a new career and giving shape to her health journey.

Yolanda Acevedo is a Constant Observer of Nurse Flow at Garnet Health Medical Center, and there’s nothing she likes better than seeing her patients smile. But being a caregiver isn’t something she leaves at work. Yolanda also manages her father, Neftali Acevedo Cruz’s, illness.

Several years ago, her father began having trouble walking, so Yolanda flew to Puerto Rico and brought him to New York to care for him. Soon after, he was diagnosed with dementia and moved to a nearby nursing facility, where Yolanda could continue to see him regularly.

    Listen to Yolanda’s story.

Caring for her dad introduced her to the world of healthcare. As she learned more about his illness, she found herself more and more interested, so much that she decided to leave the sales and banking jobs she held and make a big career change: She followed her newly discovered passion and accepted a position with Garnet Health. “I wanted to learn how to help my dad, and others too,” she said. “So, I made a big change and I’m glad I did, even though working here is my first experience in healthcare, other than watching General Hospital with my sisters when we were growing up!”

In her position, Yolanda’s primary responsibility is to maintain constant, visual and aural observation of her patients to help ensure their safety and well-being. It’s a responsibility that she doesn’t take lightly, so this spring she decided to begin her own health journey so she can remain strong for her father and her patients. “My goal is to lose 20 pounds by my birthday in June,” she said.

Yolanda’s journey includes a healthy eating tip she learned from her mother, who recently turned 94 years old. She prepares chicken and other lean meats “al vapor,” adding a touch of avocado oil and cooking with water vapors instead of frying. She also seasons her meals with onion powder and fresh garlic, cilantro and peppers that she grows. “This way, my meals taste good, and they aren’t dried out from the oven or greasy from frying,” she said. “Plus, it saves money, and it’s good for you.”

I want to go back to visit Puerto Rico. I see myself relaxing on a beach after I achieve my goals, with the gentle sound of the waves and a smile on my face!

Yolanda has also increased her exercise, enjoying walks along the water at Wallkill River, a relaxing environment that’s very different from Brooklyn and the Bronx, where she spent most of her life. “I’m excited to get going with the warmer weather,” she said. “I can’t wait to smell the flowers and hear the birds singing while I get some exercise and clear my mind. I’m even going to try using my 1199SEIU Benefit Funds resistance band to do some stretching, so I know I’ll get even better results!”

Her new routine is already having a positive impact on her hypertension, which she developed 10 years ago. Yolanda is happy to say her cardiologist recently gave her some good news: Her blood pressure has stabilized, so the doctor was able to reduce one of the medications she takes.

And Yolanda’s not stopping there. Her next goal is a yoga class. She found some instructional videos online, and she’s interested in giving the Benefit Funds’ online exercise classes a try, as well. Her plan is to set up her yoga mat in her yard to make the most of the warmer weather.

The spring air has her thinking about travel. “I want to go back to visit Puerto Rico,” she said. “I see myself relaxing on a beach after I achieve my goals, with the gentle sound of the waves and a smile on my face!”

A Message From Yvonne Armstrong, 1199SEIU President

A Message From Yvonne Armstrong, 1199SEIU President

Ready to Lead, Ready to Fight!
    By 1199SEIU President Yvonne Armstrong

It is an honor to write this column as your newly-elected President. I am humbled that the members of 1199SEIU entrusted me with the great responsibility to lead our Union at a time of major challenges to healthcare, and with big fights ahead to defend our jobs, families, patients and communities.

Members participated in our election in historic numbers. They spoke out, clearly and decisively, for a new era focused on unity, transparency and putting members first—recognizing how fresh ideas are needed to bring renewed energy and a greater sense of shared responsibility and decision-making to our organization. This election was a celebration of the power of rank-and-file members to choose the direction of 1199.

As a Union, I know that our strength lies in the collective and in the wisdom of many voices. It is vital that every member and retired member—across each region, institution and job title—feel real ownership in 1199. This is, after all, OUR union, and every elected officer, staff member and I as President, serve with you in mind and in heart.

This is why we are hitting the ground running in these first 100 days. As part of our leadership team’s plan to align 1199’s priorities with the most pressing needs and concerns of the membership, I, alongside Secretary-Treasurer Veronica Turner-Biggs and the Executive Vice Presidents, will be hosting listening tours in each region to hear directly from 1199ers about what matters most.

At the same time, we are committing ourselves 100% to the national fightback against threats to healthcare and to our communities broadly. As this issue goes to print, some $625 billion in Medicaid cuts are on the table in Washington, DC, which would amount to the largest gutting of healthcare funding in US history. It would impact jobs and care across the healthcare spectrum, from hospitals to nursing homes, home care to outpatient clinics, and everywhere in between. As frontline healthcare workers, we know better than anyone how funding cuts harm patient care. Our voices are paramount in this struggle.

So much is at stake for the future of our country. But no one is better prepared than 1199 to take on these challenges and organize, mobilize and resist. I look forward to leading alongside you, shoulder-to-shoulder and arm-in-arm. Let’s get to work.

Every day, we are witnessing how the Trump administration is seeking to erase decades of progress, taking away our rights and restricting our freedoms. Immigrants are facing especially intense attacks, including within our own SEIU family. Fellow SEIU members, including Rümeysa Öztürk from SEIU Local 509 in Massachusetts and Lewelyn Dixon from SEIU Local 925 in Washington are immigrant workers who were recently swept up by ICE and detained without due process. We cannot, and will not, let these injustices stand. This fight is just beginning.

So much is at stake for the future of our country. But no one is better prepared than 1199 to take on these challenges and organize, mobilize and resist. With 1199 members at the helm of a reinvigorated movement and a union laserfocused on acting with collective decision-making and solidarity, I’m confident that we can succeed like never before. I look forward to leading alongside you, shoulder-to-shoulder and arm-in-arm. Let’s get to work.
