TEF Is Committed to Helping Members Succeed Academically with STEM Tutoring Service

The 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds’ (TEF) semester-based programs kick off the fall 2026 semester with wraparound services, including academic assistance, case management and financial support to ensure that every member succeeds.

The STEM Tutoring Service offers individualized, one-on-one instruction designed to strengthen student achievement in advanced mathematics and science. Delivered by experienced registered nurses, the service combines academic tutoring with career-focused mentorship to reinforce classroom learning and support Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) examination preparation.

Alicia Couch, a nursing student who received tutoring, reflected on how beneficial it was: “After experiencing the disappointment of not passing N4 [nursing test] during the fall semester, I questioned whether I would be able to overcome that setback. Repeating the semester in spring was emotionally challenging for me, but my tutor never allowed me to lose sight of my goal. Through her patience, encouragement, dedication and unwavering belief in my abilities, she helped me rebuild my confidence and strengthen my understanding of the nursing material we reviewed.”

By connecting theoretical concepts with practical application, tutors help students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required to succeed in both their academic programs and future healthcare careers.

Alicia continued, “The tutoring I received at TEF went far beyond teaching content. My tutor provided guidance, motivation and reassurance related to her own personal experience in the nursing profession during moments when I doubted myself. She invested her time, knowledge and energy into my success, and because of her support, I was able to persevere and ultimately complete my final semester of nursing school. Words cannot fully express how thankful I am for the STEM Tutoring Service.”

STEM Tutoring Service sessions are scheduled on a rolling, on-demand basis. Members enrolled in TEF programs should reach out to their case managers for enrollment.
