Descriptive Summary:
Over recent decades, novel pathogens have emerged globally and impacted society at large. This presentation will review case examples such as hantavirus, Ebola, measles and chikungunya to understand how these pathogens impact medical care. It will focus on early recognition and public health responses to emerging pathogens as a tool to curtail outbreaks of emerging pathogens.

- Describe current and emerging infectious disease threats affecting healthcare systems;
- Identify causes of fever in returned travelers;
- Identify skin lesions in returned travelers; and
- Recognize emerging pathogens in returned travelers.
10:30 am — Advances in Infectious Disease Diagnosis and Clinical Management

Descriptive Summary:
New methods of diagnosing infectious diseases offer opportunities to identify pathogens that would otherwise not be diagnosed by traditional methods or to identify pathogens and resistance elements more rapidly. This presentation will examine metagenomic testing and multiplex pcr diagnostic panels and the importance of interpreting these approaches with caution, as identification of genetic material in patient samples does not always indicate the presence of disease from the pathogen. Participants will also discuss newer antibiotics targeting carbapenem resistant organisms and the advantages of long-acting antibiotics for gram positive organisms.

- Understand use cases for broad spectrum metagenomic testing;
- Recognize benefits and limitations of multiplex pcr diagnostic panels;
- Identify newer beta lactam antibiotics that target carbapenem resistant organisms; and
- Recognize clinical and financial benefits of long-acting antibiotics for gram positive organisms.

Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most pressing global health threats. This presentation will explore key stewardship principles, describe the impact of antimicrobial stewardship and identify ways healthcare professionals can participate in combating antimicrobial resistance.

Infectious diseases can have significant psychological, social and behavioral consequences for patients, families and communities. This presentation will explore mental health considerations, health disparities, stigmas, social determinants of health and strategies for supporting patients throughout recovery.

- Describe the psychosocial impacts of infectious diseases on patients and families;
- Identify mental health challenges associated with acute and chronic infectious illnesses;
- Discuss the influence of social determinants of health on infectious disease outcomes;
- Recognize strategies for reducing stigma and promoting patient engagement; and
- Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches to care.
