Summer 2019
Hypertension and Type 2 diabetes affect a large number of our members. If you are living with either condition, your Benefit Fund offers programs that further support the care your doctor provides. In this issue of For Your Benefit, we highlight two of those programs: one that provides peer-to-peer mentoring for diabetes and hypertension, and one that offers a more self-guided approach to managing diabetes. And if you are at risk for diabetes or diagnosed with the condition, we encourage you to attend our Wellness Department’s “Diabetes Prevention and Management” workshop on July 20.
In this issue, one 1199SEIU member also shares her story of how she is successfully managing her diabetes. Wanda Santiago, a Registrar at Northwell Health, was diagnosed with the condition in 2018, but has since made healthy lifestyle changes—which helped her lose more than 30 pounds and get her blood sugar levels under control. And much more »

Don’t Let Stress Put You at Risk for Hypertension
Stress is part of everyday life, but the way you handle it—or don’t—can put your health at risk.
A Message from Dr. Van H. Dunn, Chief Medical Officer
Everyone experiences stress occasionally. Stress can be helpful by making you more alert and giving you energy to get things done.
Two More Choices to Help You Manage Your Hypertension or Diabetes
Through our partnerships with InquisitHealth and Welldoc, you have access to a peer (another 1199SEIU member) who can support and mentor you, or to an all-inclusive, self-managing app.
Put Your Stress in Check
Many reactions to stress, such as poor sleep, unhealthy eating habits, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle, can raise your risk of developing hypertension (high blood pressure).

Don't Miss Our "Diabetes Prevention and Management" Workshop on July 20
The family-friendly workshop will provide information about the condition, help you assess your risk and offer tips for better managing the condition if you have it.
Wanda Santiago: Member Profile
