Reminder: GNYBF Helps Eligible Members File for the Earned Income Tax Credit

As this year's tax-filing deadline nears, 1199SEIU members still have time to take advantage of the Greater New York Benefit Fund's (GNYBF) Tax Preparation Assistance Program and receive help filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For the past 10 years, the GNYBF and its partners at New York City's EITC Coalition --- led by the city's Department of Consumer Affairs, Office of Financial Empowerment --- and the Food Bank For New York City, have assisted thousands of members in accessing free tax preparation services and getting the most out of their tax refund. The 2015 program began in January at locations in all five boroughs of New York City as well as on Long Island, and in Westchester County and New Jersey. Many locations offer weekday, evening and weekend hours as well as walk-in service right up to the April 15 deadline. For more information, please visit www.1199SEIUFunds.org.

Greater New York Education Fund Provides EHR Training to Nursing Home Staff

The 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds' (TEF) Greater New York Education Fund recently provided three months of electronic health records (EHR) training to nearly 300 staff members at Bronx-based facilities Methodist Home for Nursing & Rehabilitation and Eastchester Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Participants learned basic computer skills as well as EHR system skills, such as entering physician's telephone orders and using the SigmaCare system and the Medication Administration Records/Treatment Administration Records systems.

"The SigmaCare training was both informative and adaptive, and the instructor was truly considerate and patient in meeting the needs of various staff members," said Joy Lindsey-Garvey, a registered nurse in charge of staff development and education at Eastchester. "TEF provided us with high-quality, focused computer education."

To participate in the EHR training, employers and their Union partners meet with TEF staff to determine goals, scheduling and course content. For more information, contact KenDell Jackson at (212) 284-9248 or KenDell.Jackson@1199Funds.org

1199SEIU Future of America Learning Center Celebrates Its 18th Annual Science Fair
On Saturday, March 14, the 1199SEIU Future of America Learning Center (FALC) celebrated its 18th Annual Science Fair, with students showcasing their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) projects to family, friends and guests.

Visitors were invited to explore eight classrooms, each featuring a different hands-on STEAM learning experience. In the "Healthy Habits" room, the preschool 2 class demonstrated for guests the importance of brushing teeth, washing hands and exercising to maintain a healthy body. Children and parents made healthy smoothies and explored the process of tooth decay by dipping eggshell "teeth" into soda, water and milk. In the universal pre-kindergarten (UPK) 1 class exhibit, "Systems of the Body," guests observed the workings of the digestive system, with the help of a paper towel roll "esophagus."

Visitors also toured other UPK and preschool classrooms, as well the toddler classroom, which highlighted such topics as "Sense of Touch through STEAM," "Exploring the World through Color" and "The Water Cycle." Through each exhibit, guests experienced firsthand how FALC students explore, observe, ask questions and integrate their learning into their everyday lives.
