6:00 pm — “COVID-19: Dealing with Oversized Caseloads”
Presenter:
Ingrid McFarlane, MSW, LCSW-R
Descriptive Summary:
Hospitals have been at the forefront of healthcare delivery throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The large number of COVID-19 patients and the complexity of their immediate and long-term care needs caused a significant strain on hospital operations and patient care. The changes in work practices required during the pandemic have impacted the delivery of social work and how healthcare workers have managed their larger caseloads.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand crisis intervention as it relates to social work practice in hospitals;
- Identify the basic toolkit that social workers need to navigate a changing and complex healthcare system; and
- Discuss the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on individuals who experienced the adverse effects of inequality related to race, gender, age or income.
7:30 pm — “Providing Care to Family Members of Patients”
Presenter:
Laudy Burgos, LCSW-R
Descriptive Summary:
Mental health issues have increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many individuals have felt isolated from their loved ones and other sources of social support, while some have lost relatives or friends to the coronavirus. In addition, some COVID-19 patients have family members—who are an integral part of a patient’s healing process—who are seeking care for mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Healthcare workers are often the first point of care for addressing mental health emergencies, and they have had to adapt how they provide care to help families cope with stress caused by the pandemic.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Help family members maintain connections with patients, including when the physical family presence is limited or restricted;
- Provide support in the form of groups or referrals to community resources;
- Partner with others in their institutions who can provide services to family members; and
