QCC XIII Conference

On December 13, 2012, some 450 people attended the conference, “Healing after the Storm: Rebuilding Community,” which was designed to provide support and resources to participants still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. A highlight of the event was hearing from staff at Menorah Nursing Home about how they cared for their residents and each other as the storm waters rose to the second floor of the facility, resulting in a loss of power and eventual evacuation of over 80 residents. Staff members emphasized the importance of teamwork and practicing emergency preparedness drills. Kevin Finnegan, Political Director of 1199SEIU, and Carol Rodat, New York Policy Director of PHI, provided attendees with important information about regulatory changes that will impact all nursing homes in 2013. Participants also received information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Red Cross and the 1199SEIU Member Assistance Program.
