Linda Newland
Home Health Aide, United Jewish Council of the East Side

WHY
In addition to all the clients Linda has cared for throughout her career, she also cares for her mom. It’s one of the reasons she began her health journey.
It’s safe to say that Linda Newland enjoys helping others. She’s been a Home Health Aide for 40 years—starting her job with United Jewish Council in 1988! “I was working at a fast-food restaurant when my aunt recommended the change,” she said. “I’m so glad she did, because when I give people care and affection, it makes me feel good too.”
In addition to all the clients Linda has cared for throughout her career, she also cares for her mom. It’s one of the reasons she began her health journey. “My family needs me,” she said. “If I’m not healthy, I won’t be able to care for them the way I want to.”
So, even though she has a lot of responsibility, Linda knows she needs to make time to care for herself. As someone living with type 2 diabetes, Linda works with her doctor—taking her medication as prescribed and periodically monitoring her blood pressure and sugar levels. She wants to stay in front of potential health issues.
I’ve been seeing my doctor since 1993,” she said. “We have a great relationship, so I’m confident I can trust his advice, and I’m comfortable speaking with him about my health. Not worrying about a co-pay is also wonderful.”
When Linda’s doctor suggested a GLP-1 to help control her diabetes, she decided to try it—and she’s happy to say it’s working. Her A1C is down to 6.6, from over 9, and her doctor thinks it can go even lower. “I feel very fortunate,” she said. “I know that not everyone has this opportunity, so I really appreciate it.”
She’s also incorporated healthy eating into her lifestyle, replacing empty calories with high-protein snacks, like roasted cashews and peanuts. And she’s upped her activity level, choosing to walk as often as she can, especially when she needs to shop and do other chores.
Linda has lost 25 pounds and says she doesn’t have the cravings she used to have. And her health benefits have supported her in other ways as well. She didn’t have to worry when she needed to have her cataracts removed or when she sees a physical therapist or acupuncturist to treat her sciatica. “Our benefits really are the best,” she said. “They don’t just keep me healthy—they make me feel special!”
