FYB Childcare Funds Annual FALC Science Fair

The 1199SEIU Child Care Funds’ Future of America Learning Center (FALC) held its 29th Annual Science Fair on Saturday, March 22, 2025.

This year’s theme was, “How Do We Travel? Exploring Movement and Pathways!” Our preschool, 3-K and pre-K classes explored modes of travel, including traveling by foot, on roads and through tubes and tunnels; the importance of specific safety features and functions; and community building. Each year, the science fair gives children an opportunity to engage with their classmates, teachers and families in STREAM (science, technology, relationship, engineering, art and mathematics)–based projects and exhibits that promote critical and analytical thinking, as well as conduct hands-on experiments to test hypotheses and present their findings.

FALC is committed to providing children with a nurturing, safe and stimulating educational environment, as well as cultural, racial, ethnic and economic diversity that fosters cooperative and transformative experiences. To learn more or reserve a spot, please call (718) 562-2915 or visit the FALC webpage.

Message From the Executive Director and CEO

    Dear 1199SEIU Members,

Spring is finally in full bloom! I am so happy that the days are getting longer and warmer. I love the warm weather—it boosts my mood and makes me feel like getting out and moving more. Speaking of which, this issue of For Your Benefit is chock-full of great information about the importance of the mind-body connection and the impact it makes on our health journeys.

I continue to be grateful that I am making this journey with you, my 1199 family. We know that self-care is a vital component of preventive healthcare, and an important part of self-care is “knowing your numbers.” Knowledge is power, and finding out your blood pressure, blood sugar, Body Mass Index and cholesterol numbers can provide a guide for the choices you make. To find out more, please take a moment to read or listen to Chief Medical Officer Dr. Van H. Dunn’s column in the links on the right side of this page. He discusses the importance of “knowing your numbers” with our new Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Lela Mayers.

Here at the Benefit Funds, we are always on the lookout for partnerships that allow us to expand the menu of program options available to you. So, I am excited to announce our new partnerships with Ochsner Digital Medicine and FlyteHealth. Ochsner Digital Medicine is a program to improve diabetes and hypertension medication management, and FlyteHealth is a medical weight-management program. I encourage you to learn more about these programs and the many other programs and resources available to you as an 1199SEIU member.

Knowledge is power and finding out your blood pressure, blood sugar, Body Mass Index and cholesterol numbers can provide a guide for the choices you make.

In this issue, you’ll also hear from 1199er Yolanda Acevedo, a Constant Observer of Nurse Flow from Garnet Health, who began her health journey so that she can remain strong to care for her father and her patients. You can read more about her journey here.

  • Do you know your numbers?

    Do you know your numbers?

    Do you know your numbers?

Don’t worry, there won’t be a test later. Getting a full picture of your health by seeing where you stand puts you in charge and allows you to change course if any problems come up. So what numbers are we talking about? Blood pressure, blood sugar, Body Mass Index (BMI) and cholesterol can be helpful indicators of overall health. Take a look at the breakdown below for more information on key numbers to know and guidance on getting screened.

Healthy blood pressure is around 120/80

Systolic pressure is the top number, when the heart beats, and diastolic pressure is the bottom number, when the heart rests. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the leading cause of heart disease and stroke, but lifestyle changes can lower your blood pressure and reverse your risk of complications.

What if it’s high? Upping your exercise routine and changing your eating habits, along with medication (in some cases), can help get you back on track.

A healthy A1C level is less than 5.7%

An A1C (hemoglobin A1C) test measures average blood sugar levels over two to three months. An A1C level of less than 5.7% is normal; 5.7% to 6.4% is diagnosed as prediabetes and 6.5% or higher is considered Type 2 diabetes.

What if it’s high? If your fasting blood test is high, your doctor will discuss the results with you and may recommend additional testing.

A healthy BMI is between 18.6 and 24.9

Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated based on your height and weight. BMI = [weight (lbs) ÷ (height (in)2] × 703. Please visit our Healthy Hearts page to calculate your BMI.

What if it’s high? Your doctor may consider other risk factors, such as high cholesterol or high blood sugar, and discuss lifestyle changes you can make to lose weight.

Healthy total cholesterol is less than 200

High cholesterol has no symptoms, but lowering your cholesterol reduces your risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

What if it’s high? You can reduce or even reverse some of its effects by making lifestyle changes, like decreasing your intake of saturated fat and trans fat and becoming more physically active.

    So, what happens now?

There are ways to monitor these numbers at home, but the most accurate way to know your numbers is by making an appointment for a checkup with your doctor. The good news is that even if your numbers are high, you can likely treat and reverse conditions that may come up. So get a clear view of where you stand and map a better path to health by knowing your numbers and making choices that support lifelong wellness. • Body & Mind: Building a healthy partnership

Body & Mind: Building a healthy partnership

Body & Mind: Building a healthy partnership

When you’re juggling a busy schedule and managing work demands, it’s important to carve out some time to care for your body and your mind. While doctors have long seen a correlation between physical and mental health, numerous studies have confirmed the importance of this link. It’s known as the mind-body connection, and nurturing it can have a big impact on our overall well-being.

When we experience stress, anxiety or negative emotions, the body releases stress hormones like cortisol, which can affect everything from heart health to immune function. Similarly, poor physical health can impact our mental well-being. Chronic illness or pain can lead to feelings of frustration, sadness or anxiety, while getting regular exercise can boost mood and reduce stress.

What are some things I can do to de-stress?

    • Get regular exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Choose activities you enjoy, making exercise a sustainable part of your routine.
    • Eat a balanced diet: Incorporate whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats. Reduce processed foods and limit sugar intake.
    • Relax: Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga or meditation.
    • Get enough sleep: Prioritize good sleep habits by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine and limiting screen time before bed.

Our response to stress is one of the clearest ways that mental wellness can impact our physical health. Think about the last time you felt stress. While you may have experienced building tension or racing thoughts, you likely also experienced physical reactions like increased heart rate, sweating or trouble sleeping.

While these reactions are designed to help us respond to immediate threats, chronic stress can lead to a host of health problems such as cardiovascular disease, digestive issues and a weakened immune system.

The good news is that with the right support, you can reduce or eliminate the effects of stress altogether.

  • What’s the best way to support the mind-body connection?

What’s the best way to support the mind-body connection?

What’s the best way to support the mind-body connection?

    Increasing physical activity.

Exercise reduces levels of stress, anxiety and depression by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Regular physical activity improves blood flow to the brain and promotes better sleep, which is crucial for both physical and mental health. Lack of restorative sleep can contribute to mood disorders and increased susceptibility to illness.

    Exercise ideas:
    • Support your mind and body with exercises like yoga, Pilates or tai chi that relax you, help you focus and promote feelings of calmness.
    • Head out for a walk around the neighborhood—taking in nature while exercising is a great way to stimulate your mind and improve your mood.
    • Dance it out—energize your mind and body with dance.

    Making smart food choices.

What we eat affects both our physical and mental health. A balanced, nutritious diet not only fuels the body, but it also supports brain function and emotional regulation. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins can improve mood and cognitive function.

    Foods to try:
    • Fatty fish, like salmon, cod and canned tuna
    • Berries and citrus fruits
    • Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale and Swiss chard
    • Nuts and seeds
    • Eggs
    • Dark chocolate
