FEMA Offers COVID-19 Funeral Assistance

If you’ve lost a loved one to COVID-19 and are struggling with funeral expenses, you may be eligible to receive financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provide financial assistance for COVID-19-related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020. If you qualify, you will receive a check by mail or funds by direct deposit.

If you are interested in applying for aid, call (844) 684-6333 between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm Eastern Time.

To be eligible for assistance:

  • The death must have occurred in the U.S., including U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.
  • The death certificate must indicate that the death was attributed to COVID-19.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or qualified alien who incurred funeral expenses after January 20, 2020.

Note: There is no requirement for the deceased person to have been a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or qualified alien.

Before you call to apply, FEMA suggests gathering as much documentation as possible, including:

  • An official death certificate that attributes the death directly or indirectly to COVID-19 and shows that the death occurred in the United States, including U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.
  • Funeral expense documents (receipts, funeral home contract, etc.) that include your name, the deceased person’s name and the amount and dates of the funeral expenses.
  • Proof of funds received from other sources specifically for use toward funeral costs. FEMA will not duplicate benefits received from burial or funeral insurance, or financial assistance received from voluntary agencies, government agencies or other sources.
