Students in the clinical phase of a full-time, two- or four-year college-based registered nursing program may be eligible for an annual scholarship of $2,750 for up to two years. NGRN Scholarship awards may be used to pay for things like books, personal expenses, transportation and tuition, as well as to reduce student loan balances. Recipients can also apply for up to $500 in reimbursement to help pay for a review class for the NCLEX.

The NGRN Scholarship Official Application and College Release Form can be requested by calling the Scholarship Office at (646) 473-8999 or emailing us at 1199JTSP@1199Funds.org.

Joseph Tauber Scholarship Program by the Numbers

The Joseph Tauber Scholarship Program (JTSP) supports the academic goals of the children of eligible 1199SEIU members by giving them the opportunity to attend colleges and universities in the New York City metro area and alleviating families’ common financial stressors. The longstanding program has yielded many success stories over the years, and the 2019–2020 award year was no different. Take a look at the top 10 universities and colleges currently attended by our scholarship recipients:

    University/College JTSP Attendees
    SUNY at Albany 103
    St. John’s University 90
    SUNY at Buffalo 86
    CUNY Hunter College 82
    SUNY at Stony Brook 82
    CUNY Queens College 58
CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College 57
    SUNY at Binghamton 56
    CUNY Brooklyn College 56
CUNY New York City College of Technology 56

While 78 percent of JTSP students attend school within the City and State University of New York network, a few scholarship recipients attend other schools, including the Juilliard School, and three students are even studying abroad in the U.K. through New York-based programs. Sixty-one percent of students go to public schools, 38 percent attend private schools and only 1 percent of students attend a for-profit school.

Each year, scholarships are awarded as a taxable benefit to members of the National Benefit Fund, the Greater New York Benefit Fund and the Licensed Practical Nurses Welfare Fund. In 2019, the 1199SEIU/Employer Child Care Corporation awarded $5,775,577 in scholarships through JTSP.

Kids and Teens Learn about Holiday Sleep-Away Program at Camp Open Houses

Camp life can be hard to imagine for kids and teens living in and around the New York metro area, so each year, the Holiday Sleepaway and Teen Holiday Sleepaway Program teams show kids and teens what they can expect during sessions at their camps in upstate New York.

The Holiday Sleep-Away Program, designed for kids ages 8 to 12, is held at Camp Mariah in Fishkill, New York. Nearly 40 members gathered at the open house as the Fresh Air Fund presented information about the camp experience it provides, and answered members’ questions about the program, which offers sports, music, arts crafts, nature exploration and more.

At the French Woods Sports and Arts Center in Hancock, New York, members and teens ages 13 to 17 learned about the opportunity to build personal and academic skill sets through the Teen Holiday Sleepaway Program. Thirty-one families attended the open house, which gave potential participants the opportunity to submit applications, meet camp staff and hear about program highlights, including STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) projects, team sports and the performing arts.

CCC’s Holiday Sleepaway Program provides students with meaningful learning and personal development experiences during breaks from school in the winter and spring. Of course, due to safety guidelines surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, the spring 2020 sessions were suspended. The Holiday Sleepaway Program will resume in 2021, but the Teen Holiday Sleepaway Program has been cancelled. We look forward to welcoming campers back to the program in the future!

  • National Student Clearinghouse Enrollment Verification Instructions

National Student Clearinghouse Enrollment Verification Instructions

The National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) provides verification of student enrollment. Verifying your enrollment is a critical step in the application process. The certificate the NSC provides is an acceptable alternative form of verification in place of the Letter of Attendance that our program requires. The NSC charges a $2.50 fee to obtain an enrollment certification, which can be paid using either a debit or credit card.

If you would like to use this service, please follow the directions below. It is important to note that not all colleges and universities participate in the NSC service. If you are unable to obtain enrollment verification through the NSC, you may obtain an original Letter of Attendance, at no charge, from your school’s registrar’s office or online student portal. The enrollment verification certificate must be dated after the student’s first day of classes and confirm that he or she is enrolled full time (a minimum of 12 credits). Please make sure that start and end dates for the current term are included on the enrollment verification certificate.

To obtain your NSC certificate, please go to www.StudentClearinghouse.org and complete the steps below.

    1. Click the “Order-Track-Verify” button.
    2. Click “Verify Degrees, Enrollment & Certification” from the dropdown menu.
    3. Click the “Verify Now” button.
    4. Sign in or create an account to complete the “Verification Services” section.
    5. Select the type of verification by:
      • Checking the “Current Enrollment (within the past 18 months)” box
        • Enter the student’s school’s name. If your school does not appear, click “School Keyword Search.”
      • Checking the “Dates of Attendance (for someone who has NOT received a degree)” box
        • Enter the student’s school’s name. If the school’s name does not appear, click “School Keyword Search.”
      • Entering the student’s first and last names (the names you used to enroll in college)
      • Entering the student’s date of birth
      • Clicking “Submit”
    6. Provide your payment information and click “Submit.” The NSC will only charge you if it can verify your enrollment.
    7. Once the certificate appears on your screen, click the link on the upper right side of the page to open the certificate as a PDF file.
    8. Save the PDF to your computer.
    9. Email the enrollment verification certificate to 1199JTSP@1199Funds.org.

Please note: If your college has not sent enrollment information to the National Student Clearinghouse, your enrollment certificate may not have the current term listed. This may delay processing the Joseph Tauber scholarship award.
