If You Need to Care for a Loved One, You May Be Eligible for Paid Family Leave

New York State’s Paid Family Leave (PFL) benefit is administered at no cost to 1199SEIU National Benefit Fund (NBF) members. If you’re eligible, this benefit will provide you with partial wage replacement when you need time off for one of the following qualifying events:

  • To take care of a family member with a serious health condition;
  • To bond with a newborn or newly adopted or placed child; or
  • To deal with issues arising when a family member is called to active military service.

To be eligible for the benefit, you must:

  • Work for an employer that contributes to the NBF on your behalf;
  • Be in Wage Class I, II or III; and
  • Have worked at least 26 weeks since your date of hire.

For calendar year 2022, you can receive up to 12 weeks of leave time at 67 percent of your average weekly wage (capped at 67 percent of the New York State Average Weekly Wage). Your health coverage through the Benefit Fund will continue uninterrupted while you’re on leave, and you are guaranteed the same or a comparable job after your leave ends. Paid Family Leave may be taken at the same time as unpaid Family Medical Leave (FMLA) (check with your employer), but it cannot be taken at the same time as disability leave. Your combined total disability leave and PFL in any 52-week period may not exceed 26 weeks.

To apply for the benefit, you need to complete a Paid Family Leave Benefit request form (see links below) and submit the required documentation to your employer, who will then complete and submit your request to Amalgamated Employee Benefits Administrators (AEBA), formerly known as AliCare. If you have questions about your eligibility or accessing the benefit, please call our Member Services Department at (646) 473-9200.

NBF Rochester, Greater New York and Home Care Benefit Fund members, please contact your employer if you need Paid Family Leave.
